Muhyiddin pledges support for new Lawas airport
LAWAS, the northernmost district in Sarawak, may get a new airport under the 10th Malaysia Plan yet.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday he would forward the application for the airport to the Transport Ministry for study and inclusion in the 10th plan (2011-2015).
Addressing the people at the Lawas Indoor Stadium here, he acknowledged the need for a new airport in Lawas considering that the existing one could only cater for small aircraft such as the Twin Otter.
He said RM315 million ($131.9 million) had been allocated under the 10th plan to implement various infrastructure development programmes in the Lawas district.
Muhyiddin, who is also the education minister, said RM68 million of it would be used for the repair and expansion of several schools.
He said the construction of a new hospital would be expedited.
At the event, Muhyiddin announced an allocation of RM10 million to repair and rebuild jetties near schools and settlements at river banks in Lawas.
At a news conference later, Muhyiddin said a shortage of construction materials had been identified as the cause of the delay of several federal projects in Sarawak.
"I have proposed that the state government hold discussions with the suppliers so that all projects, especially schools, can be implemented," he said, adding that it was vital to get the cooperation of the suppliers to raise production to meet demand. On the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination results, which were announced yesterday, Muhyiddin said he was happy that the achievement of students was the best in over four years. He said the ministry would identify the schools with poor results and try to improve their standards.Bernama
