Lawas Airport closed temporarily for runway clean-up

LAWAS: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has temporarily closed the airport here for clean-up, following the flash flood from heavy rain that lasted the whole of Thursday.

Members of the airport’s voluntary firefighting unit and Lawas Fire and Rescue Department were engaged on Friday to wash away the mud and dispose of debris strewn on the runway.

It is learned that a total of five Miri-Lawas flights had been cancelled.

Those involved in the clean-up strove to complete the job so the airport could reopen without further delay.

Meanwhile, Lawas District Council had deployed a team to clean up some parts of the town, also struck by flood from the swelling of Lawas River; its water level rose significantly on Thursday following a whole day of downpour.

Several areas across town were under 0.5m of floodwater. Kampung Seberang Kedai, Merapok and Sundar were also affected by heavy rain which overwhelmed the drainage.

According to a spokesperson of Lawas Fire and Rescue Department, it continues to monitor the water level of

several rivers across the district in view of the current rainy season.

On Friday, Lawas Fire and Rescue Department reported that the flood situation in Merapok here was under control.

The district station’s senior officer II MasliDollah was quoted as saying the department would be carrying out its own operation and supervision here.

“Regardless of this, we urge local residents to always be on the alert in view of the current rainy season,” he stressed.
