Tengah: Prevent Lawas becoming drug transit point
LAWAS: Efforts to combat drug activities in the district must be continued to prevent the district which is closed to the border from becoming a transit point for drugs.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan also wants prevent efforts to also focus on drug traffickers whose activities could destroy the local community.
Although priority would be given to round up drug addicts, the authorities should also prevent other aspects of drug activities, he said when officiating at the Fit, Healthy and Clean Youth Programme organised by the district Anti-Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) and Merapok Rural Youth at Kampung Bukit Puan here, on Saturday.
Awang Tengah also urged the community to join the police in the fight against drugs and not to rely on only one party in the prevention effort.
At the function, he announced an allocation of RM30,000 for the district PEMADAM to organise activities in the district.
He pointed out that Merapok district would be developed as a hub for goat breeding and cultivation of crops like rubber, oil palm and pepper so that these acitivites would help to raise the living standard of the community.
He said agricultural activities would be appropriate for Merapok because the district had fertile soil and the communities, comprising the Kedayan, Lun Bawang and Tagal, were famous with agriculture.
Awang Tengah hoped that all rubber tappers in Merapok would register with the District Agriculture Office to receive financial aid provided by the government in view of falling rubber prices.
He said the District Agriculture Office had been instructed to register all the rubber tappers in Merapok and submit their name list to him so that he could hand it to the relevant ministry.
He expressed his appreciation for Merapok community for their racial harmony and cooperation despite coming from different racial and religious backgrounds.
This was the strength which must be maintained and preserved for the future generations.
