Awang Tengah, also Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment and Minister of Public Utilities, thanked all his former teachers, particularly Liaw Ai Choo, for helping so many students, including him. Liaw, he recalled, went beyond the call of duty by not only teaching but also paying the examination fees for poor students taking the Sarawak Junior Cambridge.
“Their (teachers) caring attitude and concern for students helped cement the bond as one big family, which remains strong despite the passing of four decades,” he said at the gathering at Hotel Seri Malaysia. Awang Tengah added that the teachers’ love and solidarity among the students filled the void created by the lack of facilities and infrastructure back then.
“It is this care by our teachers and fellow students that enabled us to succeed and be what we are today.”
