BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

PUTERA Kuala Lawas defended their title in the 30 rowers marathon race of Regata Brunei Darussalam 2016, picking up their third win in a row.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, presented the trophy to the reigning champions yesterday.

Coach of the Lawas team, Damit Ali Hasan, said they underwent intensive training along Sungai Kuala Lawas about three months before the race in the Brunei River.

“We made thorough preparations in terms of rowing technique, breathing, and being in good physical and psychological conditions. It’s all about continuous training with other members and always believing that winning is doable.

“It’s not easy to win in the competition, other groups are also tough and fast,” he added.

Damit said discipline is necessary to achieve favourable results in the competition.

“There are more than 100 members in our group and everyone wanted to join in every competition that we join.

“We will stop those who show lack of discipline from taking part. Time, energy and interest are important if they want to be part of the group,” added the leader.

Putera Kuala Lawas has been competing in the Brunei regatta for five years. becoming champions in 2012 and the second runners-up in 2013 before winning again for three consecutive years.

The champions also take part in other regatta competitions held in Borneo and often managed to be in the top three.

Damit said the main aim for the establishment of Putera Kuala Lawas was to strengthen relations among communities in Kg Kuala Lawas.

“Regatta is one of the strategies in our village to integrate the whole society. It helps us to instil the value of togetherness and teamwork. Winning in this game is a bonus for our team,” he said.

Apart from the champions trophy, the team also went home with a cash prize of $6,000, which was sponsored by His Majesty.
