Dept to replace old water pipelines — Dr Rundi

March 3, 2018, Saturday

LAWAS: The Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), which was set up three years ago, always strives to improve the quality of water supply delivery across the state using appropriate strategies and modern technology.

However, the department still faces challenges in replacing the old pipes – laid deep underground over 50 years ago, including those in this district, says Utilities Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

“With modern technology, these challenges will be overcome in stages,” he said during a recent working visit to the regional water treatment plant in Trusan with Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Henry Sum Agong.

Dr Rundi added that the state government would seek additional allocations to build a new water treatment plant in Trusan to cater for the growing demands and also the rapid development of Lawas into an industrial and commercial district.

At the same time, he said efforts would also be made to replace the old water pipes throughout this district.

It is learnt that the majority of the pipes are over 50 years old.

Presently, the Trusan water treatment plant produces 20 million litres per day (MLD) versus the current demand of 24 MLD.

Moreover, some 10 MLD are lost due to leakages at many areas along the routes to residential areas and villages across the district.
