Sarawak to undertake RM1bil state water grid project

KUCHING: Sarawak is to undertake a RM1bil state water grid project following the rollout of the Pan Borneo Highway project.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, the state cabinet has decided to allocate between RM7bil and RM8bil to fund the water grid project.

He said the project would supply clean water from hydroelectic dam reservoirs to the many longhouses and settlements scattered in rural Sarawak as well as to irrigate agricultural projects. Water treatment plants statewide now draw their raw water from the rivers.

The investment in the water grid project would be about half of the cost of RM16bil for the upgrading and construction of the Sarawak portion of the Pan Borneo highway project.

The state government recently appointed a consultant to draw up a masterplan for the water grid project.

The draft masterplan, according to state Utilities Minister Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, is being fine-tunned and finalised.

Under the project’s first phase, reservoir water will be brought from the Batang Ai hydro dam in southern Sarawak to Tanjung Manis, one of the growth nodes of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy in central Sarawak.

This phase, which has been allocated RM1bil, will be completed within two years.

Future phases of the project to cover other parts of Sarawak may make use of the reservoir water from the Bakun and Murum hydro dams.

Abang Johari has set 2030 for Sarawak to be a net food exporter through the opening up of large tracts of vacant or underdeveloped land across the state for agriculture and tapping water resources from the reservoirs.
